Clam Garden Network Clam gardens are ancient intertidal features constructed by coastal First Nations of British Columbia (Canada) and Native Americans of Washington State and Alaska (USA), to enhance shellfish productivity and to feed the people. They are one of many techniques and practices enacted by Indigenous Peoples to maintain or increase the production of culturally important foods, including clams. These practices are encompassed within age-old social, economic, and spiritual beliefs and practices of coastal First Peoples.

Words of the Elders: Saving Aboriginal Languages (13:15) Arvid Charlie is among the last generation raised speaking Hul'qumi'num, the Coast Salish language spoken by the Cowichan people in BC. Like most of the 88 aboriginal languages in Canada, Hul'qumi'num is teetering on the brink of extinction. For elders like Arvid, sharing and documenting the language is a race against time. Their work embraces new technologies so that the language, culture and teachings can be reawakened in younger generations.

Coastal Salish Anthem - Chief Dan George - Vancouver Bach Family of Choirs Jul 1, 2021 (Chief Dan George Prayer Song) an authentic First Nations song of the Tseilwau-tuth, whose traditional territories we are on. The song is used with permission and was gifted to the Vancouver Bach Choirs by Gordon Dick, a First Nations educator. Gordon worked with our Partitas choir to teach them this song and its important history. This version uses supporting harmonies by Melodie Langevin and Catherine Campolin. Catherine Campolin conducts and Gordon Dick plays drum and sings. Editing by Chris and Charissa Bagan. We reached out to and received permission from several Coast Salish communities to display their logos as part of the visuals of this performance. These are just some of the many First Nations communities in the Lower Mainland on whose unceded lands we live, work, and play.

Coast Salish Weaving Oct 16, 2022 Our second “Fabric of Canada” film celebrates traditional weaving by the Indigenous Coast Salish peoples of British Columbia. These weavings have important cultural and spiritual significance and play a key role in many ceremonies and rites. The story of Coast Salish Weaving also represents an important chapter in the history of wool in Canada. Although Hereditary Chief Janice George of the Squamish First Nation set out to learn weaving as a teenager, she was not able to find someone to teach her until decades later. Now, Chief George and her partner Buddy Joseph are masters of the craft, sharing their knowledge with others and saving the practice from extinction. Chief George shares her love of wool and the incredible family story associated with creating weavings during the pre-contact period, before the introduction of sheep’s wool.
AGES 17-18 The Story of the Coast Salish Knitters (52:00) For almost a century, the Coast Salish knitters of southern Vancouver Island have produced Cowichan sweaters from handspun wool. These distinctive sweaters are known and loved around the world, but the Indigenous women who make them remain largely invisible. Combining rare archival footage with the voices of three generations of woolworkers, The Story of the Coast Salish Knitters tells the tale of unsung heroines--resourceful women who knit to put food on the table and keep their families alive. Written and directed by Métis filmmaker Christine Welsh, this is a story of courage and cultural transformation--a celebration of the threads that connect the past to the future.
