The contemporary context for Indigenous political organization and activism can be defined according to two central themes. The first is the political recognition implied by the federal government’s willingness to negotiate new "modern-day" treaties (comprehensive land claims) with Indigenous groups that lack pre-existing treaties with Canada. The second incorporates evolving legal realities in Canada that could potentially redefine the relationship between Indigenous people and the nation-state.
