The Haudenosaunee, or “people of the longhouse,” commonly referred to as Iroquois or Six Nations, are members of a confederacy of Indigenous nations known as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Originally a confederacy of five nations inhabiting the northern part of New York state, the Haudenosaunee consisted of the Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga and Mohawk. When the Tuscarora joined the confederacy early in the 18th century, it became known as the Six Nations.

Eastern Woodlands Indigenous Peoples in Canada The Eastern Woodlands is one of six cultural areas of Indigenous peoples in Canada. The region stretches from the northeastern coast of present-day United States and the Maritimes to west of the Great Lakes. The Eastern Woodlands includes, among others, the Haudenosaunee, Mi’kmaq, Ojibwe and Wendat (Huron) peoples.

The Creation Story Creation explains how the world came to be according to the Haudenosaunee. Paintings by Haudenosaunee artist Arnold Jacobs reinforce the message told in this section’s text panels and film. A turtle sculpture, created by the famous Haudenosaunee stone worker Tom Huff, is a featured artifact in this exhibit. The sculpture of the turtle contains a depiction of the Tree of Peace with each of the Haudenosaunee clan animals represented among its branches.

Haudenosaunee Traditional Dances In honoring Native American heritage and Indigenous cultures, a sharing by way of dance, song, and oral history of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) were performed on the Roswell Park campus.
Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy Stomp Dance Haudenosaunee also called Iroquois Confederacy is made up of the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora Native American Indians. They were some of the first tribes to encounter non-Indians. Today they successfully try to keep their traditional dances and languages intact. Here are some examples of their efforts. Haudenosaunee cultural leaders taught the American Indian Dance Theatre the dances of the Iroquois Confederacy. This video shows how the Haudenosaunee enter their long houses. The group then does the Stomp Dance wearing traditional Iroquois regalia.

A History of Haudenosaunee Beadwork (16:41) Haudenosaunee raised beadwork flourished as a tourist trade in the Northeast starting in the 1800s, after the Erie Canal opened. But the art form has long been an integral part of Haudenosaunee culture and identity, and has origins that date much farther back in time. At the New York State Museum and the Iroquois Indian Museums, Haudenosaunee beadworkers and historians reflect on the evolution of the craft.
