Global Celebrations: Diwali (4:24) video
Diwali is known as the celebration of lights and the triumph of good over evil – but what is the origin of this colourful Hindu celebration? Who are Rama, Sita, King Dashratha, Hanuman, and the ten-headed demon King Ravana? Why are homes cleaned, illuminated with diyas, and windows opened to welcome the goddess Lakshmi? This Miniclip tells the story of Ramayana, introduces some of the most popular traditions involved in this celebration such as rangoli, and explains how the festival occurs during the holiest month on the Hindu calendar – Kartik.
Diwali Books
Each year in mid-October to early-November, Sikh and Hindu communities around the world celebrate Diwali. Diwali means "rows of lighted lamps" and is commonly known as the "Festival of Lights”. Wherever Diwali is being celebrated, you will see shops, houses and public places decorated with lights and oil lamps, called diyas. People celebrate this festival by decorating their homes, making rangoli, sharing sweets, exchanging gifts, offering prayers, and enjoying festive fireworks. Diwali symbolizes light over darkness and is a joyful time of connecting with family and friends.
