Historical

Historical Fiction

Defined: A genre of stories that didn’t really happen, but are based on events in history. They're perfect for kids who love to explore the past, and are often full of big adventures. (One of the most famous examples of historical fiction for kids is the I Survived series.)

What are Genres?

A GENRE is just a fancy name for books that share a certain style, form or content.

There are two main types of reading material: fiction and non-fiction. Under those two main types there are smaller sub-categories, called “genres”.

Fiction - Fictional stories may be based on actual events or people, or they may be based entirely on the author’s imagination. An easy way to remember fiction is that it is fake (F for Fake).

Non-fiction - All of the information in a non-fiction book is true and based on facts.  It is not fake (NF for Nor-Fiction and NF for Not Fake).  Non-fiction books can be about any subject.

Realistic Fiction

Realistic Fiction

Defined: A genre of stories that are made up but could very well happen in real life. These stories often take place in settings familiar to your child — like schools — which makes them more relatable. (Here are books about elementary school that kids love!)

Mystery

Mystery

Defined: A genre of stories that involve a secret or crime that needs to be solved, usually by the end of the story. Because kids need to pay close attention to details and follow cause and effect, mystery books can be a great way to boost comprehension and other literacy skills.
